30-01-10 Out ont Fell

First offroad run for 2 weeks today. The edges with Fleeter.
Nice and steady pace due to the fact that im racing tomorrow and the ice was still really bad on the paths.
Nice run out to the foot of Wimberry. Then up Wimberry its almost 1000ft of climb in only half a mile or so. I felt quite good and think in the summer il be able to run all the way up it, but today ice at the top prevented a fast pace. Then along the edge to Chew, cross the dam wall and onto the other side of the valley. We added a bit of mileage by drooping down at Ashway, even the grass was lethal though as Andy fell about 5 times. back onto the reservoir path and then pretty steady back to Tanners

28-01-10

4 miles or so with Fleeter last night.
Started off from the Rising Sun past the Farrers along to Friezland. Then down the Wellihole and back up to the Royal George. Along Manchester road to the train station then up Stamford road. Back past the Spice of Life (god it smelt nice) and along Stockport road back to the rising sun. Just jogged home.

Heavy Quads

Really tired last night but still got out for 3 miles or so in just over 21 minutes. I felt pretty steady but was running fluently especially on the uphills. A decent amount of ascent as well with many twists and turns...good for concentrating on maintaining momentum uphill.

Then home for a basic set of sit-ups and reverse crunches.

Hill reps tomorrow, then 5 miles friday, 3 mile jog saturday...perfect taper for the Pennine Bridleway Relay

26-01-10 Calder Valley Calamity

Im must stress the run itself was not a calamity but the journey was a right horrible one.
Up early as usual to get my train and tram to Bury from Mossley. Day in college, finish 4pm, get tram back to Manchester, wangle a childs ticket to Mytholmroyd and bobs your uncle. Or so i thought. The fist train was delayed by 15 minutes meaning i would miss junior training and have to wait for nearly an hour at MCC. Great forward thinking Tom, because i know that trains are always perfectly on time....doh.

Anyway got to Mytholmroyd with enough time to do some streching and a gentle warm up before heading out with the 'Fast Group'....and bloody hell it was quick. Only 4 of us went out for the 8 mile route, Steve 'the machine' Smithies, Max Wharton, Tim and me. Right from the off the pace up the 3 mile climb to the halfway point of Cragg road was electric well for me anyway. My calves were burning, all efficiency had gone out of the window instead it was about labouring away so as not to get dropped off the back.

Got to the top, where allegedly the route eases off but it didnt. It was constantly up and down over the back country roads for almost 3 miles and by now I was well and truly shattered but suprisingly keeping with the pace. Then we got to the place i actually knew, 2 miles or so to go all downhill. Still a swift pace coming back into Mytholmroyd and then the pace quickened towards the finish. Max and Steve went off through the town, i caught up near the bridge just before the MCC and ever the opportunist decided to have a quick finish. Back first whey.

Got changed, into the pub for a quick drink, then back onto the train. Delayed by 15 minutes..grrr that meant missing my other train. Got to Victoria for 10:15 meaning I had a 45 minute wait for the train back. Got to 11pm, no driver had turned up. We finally set off at 11:22 what a bloody calamity. Still a top run though

25-01-10- New Gear test

I treated myself to some new socks and glove in preparation for the Pennine Bridleway relay on sunday so what better way to test them than a quick 4 mile blast round the local rounds with a few nasty little climbs.

Steady warm up down onto Manchester road then started upping the pace along to the train station. Then came diversion number 1, down wagon road then up the other street before haeding through bottom Mossley and up Park st. The start of the biggest climb led to me picking up a tiny little footpath that comes out just near Livingstone school and then straight up to Top Mossley. I was really flying going up the hill and as it flattened out towards the library i really started to put the pace in. Past the co-op and up quickedge road, a nice climb to get the blood into your claves. Then drop back down to Stamford road and then on the homestretch back along Manchester road. Up the cobbles, across the bridge over the train tracks then slump over at my front door.

My usual daily routine of nweights and core work, then to bed.

22/23/24th January

Neglected my blog for a few days.

Friday-Again little niggles left me doing core work again building up my upper body strength which wasnt such an issue but i do like to get a good run in when i can.

Saturday- My Birthday and also training highlight. Out early to get the train to Mytholmroyd for training with Graeme, Joe Crossfield was also training with me. A lad from Bingley that is doing coaching came down to watch how Graeme trains us as well so the pressure was on.

I wanted to loosen up my knees so asked if we could do an extended warm up which led to a jog upto the start of the coiners route and then several drills concentrating on uphill techniques. Then the final bit was a one minute chase where Joe had to try to catch me uphill...I WON.

Onto the main bit of training 4*1 minute ascents at our sustainable uphill pace.
Then onto the hard bit, seeing how long we could put in a bursts, a question of pace judgement. So 3 of those were a sharp learning curve but great training none the less and it left me well and truly shattered at the end

Warm down-Jog back to the MCC, then into the Shoulder of Mutton with some lads who had just finished the Hebden

Sunday-Won big on poker last night so a lie in. Bit of core work and a 2 mile jog to loosen up the system

20/01/10- Its all about the core

Got in and really didnt feel up for a run but decided to do some core work instead. Started off with my usual routine of 20 crunches followed by 20 reverse crunches. Three sets with 1 minutes rest between each one.
Then some really simple free weight exercises with my weights that i use for running so nice and light, followed by some resistance exercises.
To finish 20 press ups with chest touching the ground every time and then a few stretches off.

Since incorporating a core session a week i have felt much stronger especially when ascending so it obviously has good effects as long as you just tone and dont put on bulk muscle.

19-01-10 Nice and Fast

Went for a bit of a quick one last night. Only 3 miles round mossley but with a fair few uphills and twists and turns. In fact 450ft of ascents worth making it a AS run. Felt good and was pretty strong and consistent throughout.

18/01/10- Slow and Steady

Went out for a run at 21:30. Later than usual but it made little difference as i only did around 2 miles so as not to aggravate my knee injury from the handicap. From my house upto the top of my street as a little warm up. Then picking up the pace along to the top of Carrhill road. Climbing done.

Concentrating on steady technique along to the Highland Laddie pub. Past the Spice of Life and through the town centre. Down Old Brow then a sharp turn past my sister's house, a little climb leading uptothe town hall then onto a minor incline up Stamford Road until I was at the top by the Spice of Life. Then nice and steady back the way I came out.

Few free weight exercises at home and then to bed.

Calder Valley club handicap

My only race till the Pennine Bridleway and then till the 21st feburary at Ilkley moor. I saw this race as a good test to see how my winter training was progressing and what I needed to work on.

The rain had apparantly cleared a lot of the snow over the moor to Stoodley Pike which disappointed me slightly as i was hoping that my bog trots round the Chew Valley would come into play and get me a few extra places. But I had no need to worry,

I struggled to get any blood into my calves in the opening mile or so which led to me being quite far down the field with a lot of work to do. Gradually on the way out to the Pike I began to get going but it was a boggy slog so i settled into a nice pace in order to put in a strong 2nd half when i hoped to reel in people who had started too fast.

Turning the corner upto the Pike the 1st runners came past, i think the winner Steve Smithies had about 5 or 6 minutes on me at the point and i was only halfway. And then to my further dismay I reckoned Bill and Graham had a good 3 or 4 minutes on me by the Pike and i was lying in 17th place.

On the run back down from the Pike my conservative start stared to pay off with me taking over 3 people and pulling away from those behind me. Now my run was becoming pretty decent and i felt good. Then i hit dean lane (i think its called that) and i saw my next 2 targets that would get me a top 10 place. I had already pulled back a couple of minutes on them and now was within striking distance. Pushing through the boggy puddles and taking the short route instead of the longer drier route that most people had opted for i managed to overtake 11th place just before the narrow bit that led to the first ascent but in this case descent of the coiners junior race.

First mistake followed shortly after, a slip on the rocks whilst trying to jump over a stile led to a nicely cut knee but no matter as i was now on the descent through the fields. I was closing so quickly on 10th and by the bottom of the first descent just before passing through some sort of farm thing i was right behind him. Then i hit a road crossing and took the oppertunity to push past and opened up a sizeable lead even to my suprise closing down Graham Hill despite the massive lead he held over me at the Pike.

Into the finish and slumped over..job done 10th place with a nice cut as well.

Into the shoulder of mutton. Only 40 seconds behind Graham in the end and 1:10 behind Bill..great run and first junior prize to boot.

Lessons learned

1) Need to be more solid in the 1st half
2)Descending is going well
3) Dont try to leap over stiles on icy ground

Eagles Grip- X Talons

My birthday present off my dad.
X Talons size 10: A fell runners weapon of choice
Light and minimalist the X Talon has received rave reviews and the reputation of the shoe has certainly come to fruition, worn by a host of world class athletes namely the African phenomenons that are Geoffrey Kusuro and Wilson Chelewumo as well as my own personal hero the great Billy Burns.
So obviously when i was stood in Up and Running intent on getting some new Mudclaws also a class shoe my eyes were drawn to the amber and silver flashy looks of the X Talon. I got them size 10 for £65.
Got them home and put on my Inov8 elite soc's and headed out on my usual shoe testing route. 3 miles 1000ft from my house up to the top of Alphin. I removed the foot beds to create this feeling of barefoot running and i have to say no rubbing whatsoever even with thin socks on.

Along the bridleway which was covered in Ice but no problem for the sticky rubber sole of the X Talon and then through Hey Farm estate onto Shadows Lane. The first climb, nice and steep enough to get the calves burning and in the snowy conditions a great test for the stability of any shoe let alone one at such a low weight. It handled the conditions marvellously gripping like a dream.
On the main climb up to alphin it was hard in the deep snow but once again the X Talon showed its versatility adapting well to the mainly shrubby floor and its minimalist nature allowing me to feel the ground. A pause at the top for a quick view but it was very cold.

Then my favourite part; The descent. The X Talon really allows you to be at one with the ground. You really could write a story about every footstep. Each with its own charm and personality. Gliding over the grassy path and gripping like crampons on the icy rock. No shoe is a match for this it blows mudrocs, mudclaws and walshes out of the water, even my beloved La Sportiva crosslites. Light and flexible comparable to the finest road racers it amazed me with its delicate balance of grip, weight and strength. No surface too slippy, no ground to rough it does it all.

9th Jan- Gritters and Ice

the usual 3 mile run that faces me anytime i go to my dads. Very runnable and on a good day is possible in less than 18 minutes. Today the streets of mossley looked like they had been invaded by gritters but no matter in my Mudclaws i ploughed through the now relatovely soft snow after last nights shower. Past the co-op (nipped in to get my dad a paper) and then onto the top road that has caused many transport problems leading to all the bread selling out in the shops. Not matter though, I was running at the side of the pavement and managed just about to clock a decent mile time (5:48) on the moderate descent. The last mile has a 150ft climb in just over half a mile and then a nice rolling run down to my dad's. The uphill was quite icy today so i took it easily concentrating on efficiency. Then the last half mile was just comfortable and steady with a quick stretch off and warm down.

Tools of the Trade

Well my first kit/info bit...the main tools of my trade.

Firstly my shoes- Inov8 mudclaw 330's. They do the company a great justice, sturdy and comfy mine have lasted me over 18 months. The studs provide supreme grip over all surfaces and i have been using them recently for my road running in the snow. Without them i would be lost, Inov8 really the bees knees when it comes to off road running unlike these road shoe companies who seem to make their shoes as an afterthought. These shoes have seen me place 3rd in the North Wales Junior championships, 2nd at Burnsall, 1st Under 18 at Y Garn. My road shoes are Brooks radius that i won in a competition. They are slightly bulky and are not so comfortable after a long time as they rub but for the majority of my running they are ok-


Finally my XC spikes- The Saucony Kilkenny. Singlehandly the best spike i have ever wore. Light and responsive and cheap at only £45 from Up and Running they are the dogs. I can even get away on farmland. A staple shoe for winter training when the roads are icy

Socks- I mix and match my socks between Hilly Compression socks and Inov8 elite socs. The compression sock is great and supports my calves over the longer races but the elite soc owns over short distances, light and comfy stops any blistering even on my long road runs. Shorts- Not so important to me but i wear Ron Hill shorts in the racer style. They do me fine

Tops- I use my Calder Valley vest obviously and then depending on weather I have a Crane top for colder days and an inov8 technical tee for hotter days where the wind is strong. The Crane top is lovely and light if not a bit susceptable to cold in windy conditions. Hats- I love my hats. I have an Inov8 hotcap 60 which is cracking on sunny days when it is hot and looks really nice when dressing casually. Thursday 7th. Backroads and bedlam

Thursdays run was based on an old favourite of mine. My house to qucikedge road, down to lydgate and back to my house. All in all with my route perhaps it was 2.5 miles or therabouts. On a good day i can get round this in 17 minutes and i use it as a double run to up my mileage. Today i was flying up Quickedge road past the few farmhouses and then onto the backroads i know so well. BIG MISTAKE!!! Snow was as high as my waist and made running hard going all the way to Lydgate. This mile stretch took almost 15 minutes and on a good day can be cracked in just under 6. Got to Lydgate and strecthed out my legs for a pacey last mile or so back to my house.

Wednesday 6th..training in the snow

College cancelled again. Yey
Training consisted of a short but sharp run from my house.
Down onto the canal running on the carless roads then following the canal path to Hey farm estate. Then off road up Shadworth lane passing plenty of sledgers. Up the track to the roman road and then just over the brow of Noon sun hill turning back and returning the smae way i had came with a little detour along the bridleway to add some extra distance to my run. Great fun in the snow.

Chew Valley Skyline Reccy-2nd Jan

Again based around a forum plan, me, Manhar and originally Linda Murgatroyd planned to reccy the Chew Valley skyline route. Chew Valley is a classic fell race that used to attract upto 500 runners in the mid 90's. It is being rerun for the first time since 2000 and as such there is a real buzz about it.

On the morning of the reccy the snow was very deep and me and Manhar knew that Linda wouldnt be able to make it over from Stainland. So parking at Tanners we intended to go along to the Chew Res road and reccy the section from Chew res to featherbed moss (tough in the best of conditions). Anyway nmy great navigational sense came to fruition leading us to go up the wrong clough onto the edges, resulting in a 45 minute scramble up a stream bed and then a wander in the white out of the edges. We didnt quite know whereabouts we were so we descended back down Charnel clough into the valley again and back along via the plantations. Then to the Clarence for chips and a drink (cheers Manhar).

1st January-Giants Tooth race

My first race of the season and one of my best ever.
me and Manhar rocked up to the Causway foot inn to do this 3 mile 400ft race on New Years day. It was a steady sort of cross country race round ogden reservoir and suited my training perfectly. I had a solid run finishing 30th out of 107 and being 2nd U/18 nbeating Joe Crossfield of Halifax Harriers for the first time. Nice to see some people from all over including Wales and obviously club mates.

Started blogging

Hi everyone. Everyone seems to have started blogging so i thought why not.
What better tinme to start than from 1st jan 2010. Here i will try to write down the good, the bad and the downright stupid. My training, trips and races all aiming towards the FRA junior championships and hopefully a Welsh vest at the British and irish juniors. Throughout the year i hope to help out with BG's, Mountain Marathons etc so there should be lots to feast your eyes on.
