Long time away

Alas I have neglected my blog due to a mixture of reasons mainly exams and other business.
Lots of racing though since March
The first race was Midgely Moor and perhaps my least favourite run of the year despite finishing 1st junior. It was a real struggle through the tussocky sections and I ended up losing lots of time taking a route suggested by Mounsey.

April

1st race of the month was Rivington Pike- not really a fell race due to the large amount of road and ultimately the race that led to a 4 month battle with a knee injury.

Then on to a firm favourite Herod Farm fell race, I ran my fastest time for all 3 years I have done it but had a twinge of disapointment not to keep up with Ian from Dark Peak.

That weekend I headed to Blaenau Ffestiniog in Wales for a WFRA junior champs race at the Moelwyn 3 peaks. I felt slightly aggrieved after the long journey to miss out on the win due to the marshall making a mistake but even so 2nd was a good result ahead of the Waltz.

Anniversary Waltz hosted the opening FRA junior championship of the year and I found myself at the bottom of my age group against some stiff competition but I felt prepared due to a hard winters training and eventually I grabbed 13th place to kickstart what was a pretty successful summer period.

My Heroes

Hero is a strong word, I would only consider people who would give their lives as heroes or who really dedicate themselves to a cause such as Martin Luther King, Che Guevarra and the like. So perhaps the word hero has become trivialised but there is no other word than maybe inspirations.

Being the greedy git that I am, I have 2 sporting idols (once again slightly skewed but good all the same). One of them is a top class fell/mountain runner and the other I know personally.

So firstly Ian Holmes, his achievements are incredible. Multiple race winner, record holder, international. Still one of fell running's top guns despite his veteran status. He is famous abroad and has won the prestigous Mt Kinabalu race 3 times. Known for his descending skill he can mix it with the top lads over the short races (Blackstone edge etc), the mediums (Anni Waltz) and even the longs (Jura). We both run for the same club (Bingley) but all my fell is for Calder Valley but going into the future im certainly aiming at his level for the future.

Secondly is a much less well known guy except in small circles. Ive done a fair bit of running with him although admittedly nothing like his usual cup of tea which is ultra-running. He is called Tim Whittaker, total running psycho. He inspires this type of running madness in you when he talks 'Its just a short one' about a 33 mile race. Last year he won the Vasque Grand Slam series and is a prominent member of team krypton who are major players in ultra running. He always has a smile when running as well which is good because it is at the end of the day about enjoyment then position. When I turn 18 and start to do the odd ultra (lakeland 50 big target) then hopefully il have a chance to beat him over something although it would only work if i used his thought process of enjoyment overuling competition.

A Wuthering Weekend

On Saturday, I went to watch the Howarth Hobble and get a long-ish run in. So a 6 O'Clock drive from Mossley with my mate Tim in order to arrive for the 8am start in Howarth. In the car I was given one of his inspirational talks (he should do shows) and then got to Howarth with 40 minutes to spare.

Good chance to meet some new people and catch up with some top lads including Andy from Bingley and the Keighley lot. At 8am everyone set off and I was welcomed nnto the center for a bacon and egg butty by Brett and a general fell running chat.

At 10:50 or so me and Nick off the forum headed out the the last checkpoint. The run out washard as it was 4 miles with a long road section and Nick was on the bike. A swift run through Howarth and then past the reservoir and we were on the fell. It was a tracky run down to the checkpoint but it was still hard enough to tire me out.

I hung on until the first 10 runners had gone before heading back the same way but going round the fell instead of using the road to add on mileage. In the end I ended up running in with Simon Bourne from my club down to Howarth, back into the school for a brew and stew before a good old catch up with everyone.

Fish and chips to cap off a good day

Ian Roberts

My legs were shattered as I warmed up for my first race for 3 weeks. The 3 top local juniors, Sean Carey, Ryan Gould and Joe Crossfield were out for a run so I wrote off any chances of first junior.

The start was along a flat track so I decided to hang back and start steadily before working my way into it. So by the time I reached the road crossing I was pulling people back and felt strong despite the tiredness in my quads which seems permanant nowadays.

As we crossed the dam, I was in no mans land with a sizeable gap both ahead and behind m,e but I could see Gary Fleet in the distance so worked hard to keep up. Onto the flagged path down to Pule Hill I was flying picking off people all the way until I was in around 15th position with my mate Joe Crossfield not too far ahead. Across the road past Phil Davies who had come to watch and started the steady drag up Pule Hill. I had a decent ascent only losing 2 places but then as I descended off the top disaster struck. TWISTED ANKLE....I carried on dropping places and time all the way to the finish when I got hit by cramp. However I did slightly redeem myself by passing Joe at the end which was nice in the race of the cripples. Still a much better performance than I could have churned out a couple of months ago.

09-03-10 Orienteering in the dark

Calder Valley night score event on tuesday so I made my weekly pilgrimage over to Mytholmroyd with the view to hopefully win 1st junior.....what a misguided thought.

The big issue, it was a navigation event and my navigation is pretty awful. I know Chew Valley well but other than that I have no clue.

I decided to run solo which is supposed to mean just me and my map and compass, no one to back you up so any mistakes are your own fault. However being a crafty manc I decided just to go with the flow so followed whichever pair were ahead....Brilliant decision.

Started off in the woods which wasnt too bad as the time passed fairly quickly and all 4 checkpoints were located before everyone peeled off in different directions. I had made the decision to aim for checkpoints 3 and 4 and just to follow any team heading in that direction. So I followed a team through some brambles before ascending upto checkpoint 3. BINGO.

Uphill for ages to checkpoint 4 got it and then we began the long descent down to Calderdale High where I managed to cadge a headtorch off Bill en route. Ben Frechette being an ex-student was on the basll with his navigation round the school and it left us with time to get the last checkpoints on this playing field. A quick run down the road and dibbing our maps before a pacy run back along the canal into Mytholmroyd and a quick finish.

Unfortunately I lost out on first junior by 10 points however on paper I was a solo runner which was decent as the other junior had both local knowledge and a partner.

Into the pub for a quick drink and then back on the long journey home...all good fun

This weeks training

Thursday night- A nice trot up Alphin to watch sunset over Manchester. Fairly steady with a bit of route variation to add on distance but not anything all that interesting just mileage and ascent in the bank

4miles 1600ft

Saturday- Early training in Mytholmroyd didnt go down too well after a hectic night down Leeds. Hill reps session. Unfortunately my quads were pretty much screwed yet again and this is causing me a real worry for the lakeland and welsh races although part of me thinks it is ascending without previous momentum that causes the pain so hopefully with a long warm up and road section I should have a flyer at Anni Wa.

Sunday-Chew Valley Skyline duties and a long run.

Ashton to Hartshead Pike then down through the brickworks in Grotton up over wharmton. Onto the canal and up Alphin. Ditched my rucksack at the top and went for a run out to Chew Reservior to see the front runners then back over the peat to Alphin before a jog back down to dovestones.

Club training-2nd March

2nd time lucky as I turned up at Mythomroyd on the right night after going on Monday and spening £14 on train fares in the process only to realise it was the wrong day.

However Tuesday came quickly (well it was the next day) and again I found myself eating a Big Mac and fries on the way to training.

I got there just in time for a couple of miles off road running with the juniors as a warm up although the fact that I cant descend as fast as a ten year old does reflect my years catching up on me. Got back to MCC with a few minutes to get changed into my road gear and go out for some faster training.

I decided as it was a short run to go out with the fast group of which all the runners were much quicker than me. Just going out to Midgely I was struggling to keep the pace but on the flat and downhills I could catch back up until the next incline where I would just drop off the back. A long uphill drag of a mile or so up Stocks lane (?) left me feeling really dead on my feet and at this point I was shattered content only with the knowledge that it wasnt too bad from there. Got to the top after what seemed like hours (thanks for waiting for me) and then on the homeward stretch back down to the valley bottom, upto Midgeley and then back along to MCC. Into the pub for a drink and a chat before getting the train home which inevitibly was delayed so I had to bus it home from manchester which meant I got in at 1am and just slouched on the setee and fell asleep

Good weekend-Noonstone and Chew Valley reccy

Saturday morning 9:30 am. I force myself to wake up after my exploits since clubbing down Leeds and only getting to bed 2 hours earlier (thank god for national express). Dragged myself up to the Co-Op where Manhar had agreed to give me a lift to watch the first English fell championship race of the season, Noonstone in Todmorden.

Pre-race brew with some of the Calder Valley runners before jogging upto Stoodley Pike for the first viewpoint of the day. Quick word with Holmsey who was doing his warm-up on the slabs up and down and then for the long boggy ridge walk to Stoodley. Got there in plenty of time and met Stanners on the top plenty of time for a good chat about all sorts; high peak marathon, BG, Manchester United etc. Also saw Andy Nicoll who sorted out my Bingley membership for me. It was turning out to be a good social event really.

First glimpse of the runners was them swarming down London road and then around 7 minutes later Ian Holmes, Rob Jebb, Lloyd Taggart, Danny and Robe Hope came through with a couple of metres on the field. CVFR were doing well at the pike with Shaun Godsman in the top 10 and 3 other runners (Gav, Alex and James) all in the top 30 or so. Helen Fines was 6th in the ladies with Sally not far behind in 8th or 9th.

Jogged back down with Stanners and walked along the London road past some of the back markers (who were very quick still) and then to the bottom of the last descent about 100m from the finish. A gripping run in by Matt Speake just edging out Lloyd Taggart which provided an unexpected result. First CVFR member Shaun took the quickest route down in the descent but couldnt quite hold off Darren Kay from Horwich on the run in. 10th place though is a great result and im glad he is in my fantasy fellrunning team. Helen Fines came in 7thn with Sally also in the top 10 and Calder valley sealed the womens prize and 3rd mens team.

Into the pub to catch up on race information and have a chat with some runners that dont usually race round here. Then back home for another night out down Manchester....this is the life.

Chew Valley reccy

Got back from Manchester earlyish on saturday night (1am) but had to be up at 6am to walk to Tanners in order to do a Chew Valley Skyline reccy at 8am.

Only 2 runners ventured over due to bad weather and early start time but even so it was cracking run. I was joined by Dom (Saddleworth) and Rik (CVFR). The route upto Alderman was a bit suspect because I kept to close to the middle and ended up with a bit of a scramble despite the fact that there is a perfectly runnable route slightly to the right. Time for a couple of photos at the top before the bog trot to Broadstone.

We came out onto the Cotton Famine road about 100m overshopt of Broadstone but it wasnt too much of an issue because the paths are good and it is a quick route anyhow. Down the the milepost and across the road. Down through the fields managing to pick a really good line down to the dam wall and then straight up the other side. The ascent onto the top was very slippy and icy but still passed fairly quickly which suprised me.

We then went along the edge and up over the bump above Ashway Cross, pausing for a few shots on the top before making our way (slowly) through the deep snow. Once on the otherside of the gully tha runs up from Dovestones the running became quicker but a bit of misnavigation led to more climbing only 100ft or so but still horrible. It was a long plod to Chew and I sensed I was in serious danger of blowing up so I stuffed a chicken butty (thanks mum) down my mouth and then we started the run out and back to Featherbed moss trig point. We split paths here, Dom going for the more direct cross country route and me showing Rik the conventional grough running route. I had one of my bad navigation moments and convinced myself I was wrong so overshot the grough....finally realisng that I was indeed initially right. Eventually we hit my footsteps from a previous night when I had shown someone from Horwich (i think) the route upto the trig.

Back down to Chew and along to Wimberry went by with little problems its all on decent tracks that can sometimes leave you feeling a scared due to the proximity of the edge. Along to Alphin through relatively deep snow. Upto the trig and then to the downhill. Now for the purposes of the race and the navigation/ terrain judgement im not going to reveal the descent route that we took off Alphin on here however if you want to know or midweek reccy (thursday afternoon) email me on tomtherunner42@yahoo.co.uk .

Instead of going up through the plantations we just jogged back down to the cars at Tanners.

I think I may be burning out

Training for the past 3 days has been very hard with a total of only 2 runs and around 6 miles

Monday, I felt a bit sluggish but put that down to a hard weekend however I still managed a fairly hilly 2 miles on the road. The time wasnt too poor either just pushing under 12 minutes but something just didnt feel right.

Went watching Oldham at Leeds on tuesday night so no running to mention.

Last night however I intended to go out for around 50 minutes fairly steady. My calves just felt heavy and I had to generate a lot of arm swing in order to compensate for it. My stride length was noticibly shorter and I couldnt hold a decent rhythm. I cut it short after 4 miles in 24:48 and just went and streched off.

Hope this isnt the start of a burnout

Long time no see

Well its been a while since i posted so here is the low down. I got injured with Achilles Tendonitis and then went to Munich and since then ive just neglected my blog really. I managed to get out for 3 days good running in Germany but wont write about them today.

This week I felt tired after a Chew valley skyline reccy on sunday so thats 14 miles 2000feet of ascent.

14m 2000ft

No running on monday or tuesday due to general fatigue and a bit of a cold.

On wednesday I did 2 runs one to the swimming baths and back so 4 miles at around 7 minute miles and then a tediously slow run with my mate Josh and his friend Callum. The snow was down on the tops and it was white out rendering local knowledge useless even so we did about 7 miles.

11 miles 1100ft

Thursday- road run with Andy through Mossley, one lap of Greenfield and then back up Roughtown road. Andy is getting fit again so I struggled coming up the Wellihole but it was in the end a good 5 mile run.

5miles

Friday-Wasnt in a running mood really but dragged myself out for a swift 8 miles or so round saddleworth averaging 7:20 miles. Quite enjoyable but my knee started to play up.

Saturday- 13 miles on the fell with Phil and Andy. A variation of the Ravenstones fell race course with an addition of ascending Wimberry and coming off Alphin. Quite hard at first but legs loosened up eventually and it set me up well for the Ilkley Moor race

13 miles

Sunday- Ilkley Moor, my first real test of the season with all to play for, extensive prizes that I liked the look of and a tenner bet with a mate (kind of). Had a steady start and was climbing really well even in the slippy ice, huge credit to my X-Talons. Never had a problem winning the tenner but my navigation let me down on a flagged course. Couldnt see the flag ahead and lost a minute or so which eventually led to me nbeing squeezed out for 3rd U/18. Pretty happy though 50th out of 215 isnt too bad especially when I havent started any speed work yet so all eyes forward to a hopefully successful summer season (alliteration :))

Pennine Bridleway Relay-31/01/10

On the Calder Valley B team today for the short leg of the PBWR. From Littleborough to Whitworth. It was a cracking day and despite what others will say it was warm enough for just a vest. I felt I ran quite well as we were 23rd fastest team on our leg and I still had a lot more to give to the point that when we decided to push in the last mile, I dropped my partner by 100m by mistake. Next year id like to be in the A team as I felt i was fast enough to warrant a place but oh well its better than I could have done when i started running 6 years ago.
The Team eventually finished 18th overall after gary and Alistair hauled back 2 more teams on the last leg. We were also 2nd B team.

30-01-10 Out ont Fell

First offroad run for 2 weeks today. The edges with Fleeter.
Nice and steady pace due to the fact that im racing tomorrow and the ice was still really bad on the paths.
Nice run out to the foot of Wimberry. Then up Wimberry its almost 1000ft of climb in only half a mile or so. I felt quite good and think in the summer il be able to run all the way up it, but today ice at the top prevented a fast pace. Then along the edge to Chew, cross the dam wall and onto the other side of the valley. We added a bit of mileage by drooping down at Ashway, even the grass was lethal though as Andy fell about 5 times. back onto the reservoir path and then pretty steady back to Tanners

8 miles, 1000ft give or take a few ungulations. 2 hours

29-01-10 Easy does it

Started to feel quite fatigued today. Only 2km and a bit of core work. Just a nice way to start the weekend

28-01-10

4 miles or so with Fleeter last night.
Started off from the Rising Sun past the Farrers along to Friezland. Then down the Wellihole and back up to the Royal George. Along Manchester road to the train station then up Stamford road. Back past the Spice of Life (god it smelt nice) and along Stockport road back to the rising sun. Just jogged home.

Heavy Quads

Really tired last night but still got out for 3 miles or so in just over 21 minutes. I felt pretty steady but was running fluently especially on the uphills. A decent amount of ascent as well with many twists and turns...good for concentrating on maintaining momentum uphill.

Then home for a basic set of sit-ups and reverse crunches.

Hill reps tomorrow, then 5 miles friday, 3 mile jog saturday...perfect taper for the Pennine Bridleway Relay

26-01-10 Calder Valley Calamity

Im must stress the run itself was not a calamity but the journey was a right horrible one.
Up early as usual to get my train and tram to Bury from Mossley. Day in college, finish 4pm, get tram back to Manchester, wangle a childs ticket to Mytholmroyd and bobs your uncle. Or so i thought. The fist train was delayed by 15 minutes meaning i would miss junior training and have to wait for nearly an hour at MCC. Great forward thinking Tom, because i know that trains are always perfectly on time....doh.

Anyway got to Mytholmroyd with enough time to do some streching and a gentle warm up before heading out with the 'Fast Group'....and bloody hell it was quick. Only 4 of us went out for the 8 mile route, Steve 'the machine' Smithies, Max Wharton, Tim and me. Right from the off the pace up the 3 mile climb to the halfway point of Cragg road was electric well for me anyway. My calves were burning, all efficiency had gone out of the window instead it was about labouring away so as not to get dropped off the back.

Got to the top, where allegedly the route eases off but it didnt. It was constantly up and down over the back country roads for almost 3 miles and by now I was well and truly shattered but suprisingly keeping with the pace. Then we got to the place i actually knew, 2 miles or so to go all downhill. Still a swift pace coming back into Mytholmroyd and then the pace quickened towards the finish. Max and Steve went off through the town, i caught up near the bridge just before the MCC and ever the opportunist decided to have a quick finish. Back first whey.

Got changed, into the pub for a quick drink, then back onto the train. Delayed by 15 minutes..grrr that meant missing my other train. Got to Victoria for 10:15 meaning I had a 45 minute wait for the train back. Got to 11pm, no driver had turned up. We finally set off at 11:22 what a bloody calamity. Still a top run though

25-01-10- New Gear test

I treated myself to some new socks and glove in preparation for the Pennine Bridleway relay on sunday so what better way to test them than a quick 4 mile blast round the local rounds with a few nasty little climbs.

Steady warm up down onto Manchester road then started upping the pace along to the train station. Then came diversion number 1, down wagon road then up the other street before haeding through bottom Mossley and up Park st. The start of the biggest climb led to me picking up a tiny little footpath that comes out just near Livingstone school and then straight up to Top Mossley. I was really flying going up the hill and as it flattened out towards the library i really started to put the pace in. Past the co-op and up quickedge road, a nice climb to get the blood into your claves. Then drop back down to Stamford road and then on the homestretch back along Manchester road. Up the cobbles, across the bridge over the train tracks then slump over at my front door.

My usual daily routine of nweights and core work, then to bed.

22/23/24th January

Neglected my blog for a few days.

Friday-Again little niggles left me doing core work again building up my upper body strength which wasnt such an issue but i do like to get a good run in when i can.

Saturday- My Birthday and also training highlight. Out early to get the train to Mytholmroyd for training with Graeme, Joe Crossfield was also training with me. A lad from Bingley that is doing coaching came down to watch how Graeme trains us as well so the pressure was on.

I wanted to loosen up my knees so asked if we could do an extended warm up which led to a jog upto the start of the coiners route and then several drills concentrating on uphill techniques. Then the final bit was a one minute chase where Joe had to try to catch me uphill...I WON.

Onto the main bit of training 4*1 minute ascents at our sustainable uphill pace.
Then onto the hard bit, seeing how long we could put in a bursts, a question of pace judgement. So 3 of those were a sharp learning curve but great training none the less and it left me well and truly shattered at the end

Warm down-Jog back to the MCC, then into the Shoulder of Mutton with some lads who had just finished the Hebden

Sunday-Won big on poker last night so a lie in. Bit of core work and a 2 mile jog to loosen up the system

Thursday 21 January 2010

20/01/10- Its all about the core

Got in and really didnt feel up for a run but decided to do some core work instead. Started off with my usual routine of 20 crunches followed by 20 reverse crunches. Three sets with 1 minutes rest between each one.
Then some really simple free weight exercises with my weights that i use for running so nice and light, followed by some resistance exercises.
To finish 20 press ups with chest touching the ground every time and then a few stretches off.

Since incorporating a core session a week i have felt much stronger especially when ascending so it obviously has good effects as long as you just tone and dont put on bulk muscle.

19-01-10 Nice and Fast

Went for a bit of a quick one last night. Only 3 miles round mossley but with a fair few uphills and twists and turns. In fact 450ft of ascents worth making it a AS run. Felt good and was pretty strong and consistent throughout.

18/01/10- Slow and Steady

Went out for a run at 21:30. Later than usual but it made little difference as i only did around 2 miles so as not to aggravate my knee injury from the handicap. From my house upto the top of my street as a little warm up. Then picking up the pace along to the top of Carrhill road. Climbing done.

Concentrating on steady technique along to the Highland Laddie pub. Past the Spice of Life and through the town centre. Down Old Brow then a sharp turn past my sister's house, a little climb leading uptothe town hall then onto a minor incline up Stamford Road until I was at the top by the Spice of Life. Then nice and steady back the way I came out.

Few free weight exercises at home and then to bed.

Calder Valley club handicap

My only race till the Pennine Bridleway and then till the 21st feburary at Ilkley moor. I saw this race as a good test to see how my winter training was progressing and what I needed to work on.

The rain had apparantly cleared a lot of the snow over the moor to Stoodley Pike which disappointed me slightly as i was hoping that my bog trots round the Chew Valley would come into play and get me a few extra places. But I had no need to worry,

I struggled to get any blood into my calves in the opening mile or so which led to me being quite far down the field with a lot of work to do. Gradually on the way out to the Pike I began to get going but it was a boggy slog so i settled into a nice pace in order to put in a strong 2nd half when i hoped to reel in people who had started too fast.

Turning the corner upto the Pike the 1st runners came past, i think the winner Steve Smithies had about 5 or 6 minutes on me at the point and i was only halfway. And then to my further dismay I reckoned Bill and Graham had a good 3 or 4 minutes on me by the Pike and i was lying in 17th place.

On the run back down from the Pike my conservative start stared to pay off with me taking over 3 people and pulling away from those behind me. Now my run was becoming pretty decent and i felt good. Then i hit dean lane (i think its called that) and i saw my next 2 targets that would get me a top 10 place. I had already pulled back a couple of minutes on them and now was within striking distance. Pushing through the boggy puddles and taking the short route instead of the longer drier route that most people had opted for i managed to overtake 11th place just before the narrow bit that led to the first ascent but in this case descent of the coiners junior race.

First mistake followed shortly after, a slip on the rocks whilst trying to jump over a stile led to a nicely cut knee but no matter as i was now on the descent through the fields. I was closing so quickly on 10th and by the bottom of the first descent just before passing through some sort of farm thing i was right behind him. Then i hit a road crossing and took the oppertunity to push past and opened up a sizeable lead even to my suprise closing down Graham Hill despite the massive lead he held over me at the Pike.

Into the finish and slumped over..job done 10th place with a nice cut as well.

Into the shoulder of mutton. Only 40 seconds behind Graham in the end and 1:10 behind Bill..great run and first junior prize to boot.

Lessons learned

1) Need to be more solid in the 1st half
2)Descending is going well
3) Dont try to leap over stiles on icy ground

Eagles Grip- X Talons

My birthday present off my dad.
X Talons size 10: A fell runners weapon of choice
Light and minimalist the X Talon has received rave reviews and the reputation of the shoe has certainly come to fruition, worn by a host of world class athletes namely the African phenomenons that are Geoffrey Kusuro and Wilson Chelewumo as well as my own personal hero the great Billy Burns.
So obviously when i was stood in Up and Running intent on getting some new Mudclaws also a class shoe my eyes were drawn to the amber and silver flashy looks of the X Talon. I got them size 10 for £65.
Got them home and put on my Inov8 elite soc's and headed out on my usual shoe testing route. 3 miles 1000ft from my house up to the top of Alphin. I removed the foot beds to create this feeling of barefoot running and i have to say no rubbing whatsoever even with thin socks on.

Along the bridleway which was covered in Ice but no problem for the sticky rubber sole of the X Talon and then through Hey Farm estate onto Shadows Lane. The first climb, nice and steep enough to get the calves burning and in the snowy conditions a great test for the stability of any shoe let alone one at such a low weight. It handled the conditions marvellously gripping like a dream.
On the main climb up to alphin it was hard in the deep snow but once again the X Talon showed its versatility adapting well to the mainly shrubby floor and its minimalist nature allowing me to feel the ground. A pause at the top for a quick view but it was very cold.

Then my favourite part; The descent. The X Talon really allows you to be at one with the ground. You really could write a story about every footstep. Each with its own charm and personality. Gliding over the grassy path and gripping like crampons on the icy rock. No shoe is a match for this it blows mudrocs, mudclaws and walshes out of the water, even my beloved La Sportiva crosslites. Light and flexible comparable to the finest road racers it amazed me with its delicate balance of grip, weight and strength. No surface too slippy, no ground to rough it does it all.

For £65 another cracking bargain from Inov8

9th Jan- Gritters and Ice

the usual 3 mile run that faces me anytime i go to my dads. Very runnable and on a good day is possible in less than 18 minutes. Today the streets of mossley looked like they had been invaded by gritters but no matter in my Mudclaws i ploughed through the now relatovely soft snow after last nights shower. Past the co-op (nipped in to get my dad a paper) and then onto the top road that has caused many transport problems leading to all the bread selling out in the shops. Not matter though, I was running at the side of the pavement and managed just about to clock a decent mile time (5:48) on the moderate descent. The last mile has a 150ft climb in just over half a mile and then a nice rolling run down to my dad's. The uphill was quite icy today so i took it easily concentrating on efficiency. Then the last half mile was just comfortable and steady with a quick stretch off and warm down.

Tools of the Trade

Well my first kit/info bit...the main tools of my trade.

Firstly my shoes- Inov8 mudclaw 330's. They do the company a great justice, sturdy and comfy mine have lasted me over 18 months. The studs provide supreme grip over all surfaces and i have been using them recently for my road running in the snow. Without them i would be lost, Inov8 really the bees knees when it comes to off road running unlike these road shoe companies who seem to make their shoes as an afterthought. These shoes have seen me place 3rd in the North Wales Junior championships, 2nd at Burnsall, 1st Under 18 at Y Garn. One word BRILLIANT- http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Detail.asp?PG=PG1&L=26&P=5050973112

My road shoes are Brooks radius that i won in a competition. They are slightly bulky and are not so comfortable after a long time as they rub but for the majority of my running they are ok-

Finally my XC spikes- The Saucony Kilkenny. Singlehandly the best spike i have ever wore. Light and responsive and cheap at only £45 from Up and Running they are the dogs. I can even get away on farmland. A staple shoe for winter training when the roads are icy

Socks- I mix and match my socks between Hilly Compression socks and Inov8 elite socs. The compression sock is great and supports my calves over the longer races but the elite soc owns over short distances, light and comfy stops any blistering even on my long road runs. At only 18 grams its one for the racing snakes-http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Detail.asp?PG=PG7&L=26&P=5050973074

Shorts- Not so important to me but i wear Ron Hill shorts in the racer style. They do me fine

Tops- I use my Calder Valley vest obviously and then depending on weather I have a Crane top for colder days and an inov8 technical tee for hotter days where the wind is strong. The Crane top is lovely and light if not a bit susceptable to cold in windy conditions. The technical tee is cracking with a zip in case you start to get warm its a must on those long summer runs or slightly breezy days- http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Detail.asp?PG=PG5&L=26&P=5050973084

Hats- I love my hats. I have an Inov8 hotcap 60 which is cracking on sunny days when it is hot and looks really nice when dressing casually. And then i have my beanie for winter that has become a part of me in a way even though i just found it when i was out on a run.http://www.inov-8.com/Products-Detail.asp?PG=PG5&P=5050973061&L=26

Thursday 7th. Backroads and bedlam

Thursdays run was based on an old favourite of mine. My house to qucikedge road, down to lydgate and back to my house. All in all with my route perhaps it was 2.5 miles or therabouts. On a good day i can get round this in 17 minutes and i use it as a double run to up my mileage. Today i was flying up Quickedge road past the few farmhouses and then onto the backroads i know so well. BIG MISTAKE!!! Snow was as high as my waist and made running hard going all the way to Lydgate. This mile stretch took almost 15 minutes and on a good day can be cracked in just under 6. Got to Lydgate and strecthed out my legs for a pacey last mile or so back to my house.

Wednesday 6th..training in the snow

College cancelled again. Yey
Training consisted of a short but sharp run from my house.
Down onto the canal running on the carless roads then following the canal path to Hey farm estate. Then off road up Shadworth lane passing plenty of sledgers. Up the track to the roman road and then just over the brow of Noon sun hill turning back and returning the smae way i had came with a little detour along the bridleway to add some extra distance to my run. Great fun in the snow.

Chew Valley Skyline Reccy-2nd Jan

Again based around a forum plan, me, Manhar and originally Linda Murgatroyd planned to reccy the Chew Valley skyline route. Chew Valley is a classic fell race that used to attract upto 500 runners in the mid 90's. It is being rerun for the first time since 2000 and as such there is a real buzz about it.

On the morning of the reccy the snow was very deep and me and Manhar knew that Linda wouldnt be able to make it over from Stainland. So parking at Tanners we intended to go along to the Chew Res road and reccy the section from Chew res to featherbed moss (tough in the best of conditions). Anyway nmy great navigational sense came to fruition leading us to go up the wrong clough onto the edges, resulting in a 45 minute scramble up a stream bed and then a wander in the white out of the edges. We didnt quite know whereabouts we were so we descended back down Charnel clough into the valley again and back along via the plantations. Then to the Clarence for chips and a drink (cheers Manhar).

1st January-Giants Tooth race

My first race of the season and one of my best ever.
me and Manhar rocked up to the Causway foot inn to do this 3 mile 400ft race on New Years day. It was a steady sort of cross country race round ogden reservoir and suited my training perfectly. I had a solid run finishing 30th out of 107 and being 2nd U/18 nbeating Joe Crossfield of Halifax Harriers for the first time. Nice to see some people from all over including Wales and obviously club mates.

Started blogging

Hi everyone. Everyone seems to have started blogging so i thought why not.
What better tinme to start than from 1st jan 2010. Here i will try to write down the good, the bad and the downright stupid. My training, trips and races all aiming towards the FRA junior championships and hopefully a Welsh vest at the British and irish juniors. Throughout the year i hope to help out with BG's, Mountain Marathons etc so there should be lots to feast your eyes on.
